CATARACT SURGERY - INTRAOCULAR FOLDABLE LENS COVERAGE

This information applies to BC residents who require cataract surgery and are enrolled in the BC Medical Services Plan.

Effective 4 June 2012 –The Soft Foldable monofocal intraocular lenses, the most commonly selected type of replacement lens, will be provided at no charge to the patient by the Health Authority.

Individuals who need cataract surgery will not pay out of pocket expenses for their surgery if they select an insured lens (soft foldable monofocal lens) – Consultations, visits and testing for insured lenses should not be billed to patients.

Individuals scheduled for cataract surgery before 4 June 2012 may wish to discuss these changes with their physicians, as the ministry will not reimburse patients who have their surgery before this change.

It is encouraged individuals who are considering cataract surgery ensure they discuss this new benefit in detail with their eye surgeon (Ophthamologist).
