The B.C. government’s Nov. 22 announcement of a $516 million housing allocation supports the Westcoast Native Health Care Society (WNHCS) to move forward on their Westporte Expansion Project in Port Alberni, reads a press statement from the society.
The Society will add 10 complex care beds in Residential Care to make a total of 41 beds available to Alberni Valley and Westcoast residents.
There will be new construction of 20 affordable living units for low to moderate income seniors. The 550 square foot, one bedroom units will be suitable for singles or couples.
Port Alberni urgently needs the care and housing for seniors living at risk in their homes or living in acute care hospital beds because there are no other options at this time.
“We have the expertise to care for the elderly and we have a vision of enhancing the Westporte subdivision while meeting the needs of residents in our care,” said chair of the WNHCS Board of Directors Darleen Watts.
An Open House on Sept. 23 provided the first opportunity for valley residents to discuss Westcoast Native Health Care Society’s preliminary plans. The 30 new units will be ready for occupancy in about the summer of 2018.
