With barely a week left to go before the start of the 2014 Nuu-chah-nulth Tlu-piich Games, organizers are working furiously to get everything in place so that the young athletes and their cheerleaders can enjoy the games with as few glitches as possible.
Most important to a successful event is a full roster of dedicated volunteers to help make the games run smoothly.
“We need volunteers for Track & Field and also score keepers for the fast and slo pitch tournaments,” said Tlu-piich Games Coordinator Marisa Bennett.
Anyone wishing to volunteer may reach Marisa or Luke Jeffries, Tlu-piich Games Youth Operations Coordinator at the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council offices.
The names of all volunteers will be entered into a draw for a chance to win an iPad Mini with retina display or a 32gig iPod Touch. The draw will be held during the closing ceremonies on Aug. 12.
The Tlu-piich Games would not be the success it is without fundraising events like the annual Swing Fore Tlu-piich Games Golf tournament, which takes place July 31 at the Alberni Golf Club.
This year 16 teams of 4 players have signed up but there’s always room for more.
The entry fee is $600 per team or $150 per person and it promises to be a fun-filled, sun drenched afternoon of 18-hole golf with a chance to win a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one.
Participants playing in the tournament will be supporting Nuu-chah-nulth Tlu-piich games and will have access to a power cart during play. Tee-off time is at noon and runs until 5 p.m.
Players will be invited back the same evening for a buffet dinner complete with prizes and finishing up with a live auction.
Bennett says some first nations have entered teams, including Tseshaht, Huu-ay-aht and there is a Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council team.
In addition, there will be regular supporters of Nuu-chah-nulth-aht competing including teams from the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Bank of Montreal and a team from New Relationship Trust.
Another proud supporter of Nuu-chah-nulth-aht is Chatwin Engineering who has generously donated a team entry fee; the players are being selected by Tlu-piich Games Committee.
They are working to make up a team of strong supporters of the Games and are considering adding a young player.
“We are looking for a youth representative between the ages 13 to 29 who would like to play golf,” Bennett said.
