Nuu-chah-nulth person tests positive for COVID-19

British Columbia

Ahousaht Elected Chief Greg Louie confirmed in a video released to membership that an Ahousaht member has tested positive for COVID-19.

In the video statement, released today (Aug. 14) to membership, Louie stated that he received a call from First Nations Health Authority at 4:33 p.m. this afternoon informing him that a member has tested positive for the virus.

Louie was on the road, on vacation at the time of the call but felt the need to remind people that COVID-19 is a real concern.

“Ahousaht leadership feels it’s important for you to know this,” said Louie

He assured residents of Ahousaht that they are safe because the person that tested positive does not live in the village nor on Vancouver Island.

“They are self-isolating where they are,” said Louie.

He went on to say that no identifying information, such as age and gender was given about the person.

“Let’s come together and pray for this person; lets pray for a good, strong recovery,” he told members.

Because of this case, Louie said Ahousaht leadership will probably need to make changes regarding members making requests to come home to the village, because the virus is close, he reminded them.

“Today there were 84 new cases in B.C. and there were 78 yesterday,” Louie said.

He urged people to be careful, wash hands, use hand sanitizer and stay home if they are not feeling well.

“We’re not through this Ahousaht; stay vigilant stay strong, and say prayers for our member,” he pleaded.
