The search is on for a missing Ahousaht man following his disappearance this morning from a small island near the community.
The Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Victoria has confirmed that the man’s disappearance is an RCMP-led case and that the Canadian Coast Guard was called in to assist.
According to sources, the adult male was taking part in a cultural healing practice that involves solitude. He was reportedly brought to nearby Bartlett Island just south of Flores Island. Sources say there was another man staying on another part of the island.
Searchers were dispatched early in the morning of Thursday, Aug. 9.
The Canadian Coast Guard and the RCMP have been notified.
The RCMP Media Spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
This is the second man to go missing from near Ahousaht in just over two weeks. On July 22, Richard Amos, 23, went missing after leaving the village in a canoe to go fishing. His canoe and shoe were quickly located near Shot Islets, in the same general area as Bartlett Island.
The official search for Amos was stood down by the Ahousaht Emergency Response Team July 30, in an announcement by Curtis Dick.
