House of Huu-ay-aht celebrates 25 years

Anacla, BC

On July 26 the House of Huu-ay-aht filled with the First Nation’s members and guests, celebrating 25 years since the longhouse was built in Anacla.

The day was filled with cultural performances and feasting under the four massive spruce logs that were moved to Anacla 25 years ago to stretch across what would be the first longhouse built in Huu-ay-aht territory in over a century. At a cost of approximately $2 million, the project was funded by the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, with the help of donated materials and services – including an estimated half million worth of volunteered time and equipment use from MacMillan Bloedel to move the spruce logs from Ditidaht territory to Anacla.

In the quarter century since, the House of Huu-ay-aht has served multiple purposes, including hosting government meetings, people’s assemblies, cultural events and local sports. Meanwhile, the surrounding area of upper Anacla has seen a proliferation of homes for the First Nation’s members.

More to come…
